Response of the global carbon cycle to human-induced changes in Southern Hemisphere winds

چکیده
[1] An Earth System model is used to explore the response of the oceanic and terrestrial carbon sinks to strengthening and poleward shifting of the extratropical Southern Hemisphere winds, which is a robust feature of climate models’ response to greenhouse gas forcing through the 20th and 21st centuries. We find that under time-varying CO2 emissions poleward intensifying Southern Hemisphere winds act on average to slightly enhance the efficacy of both the oceanic and terrestrial carbon sinks, thus providing a small negative feedback on the atmospheric CO2 concentration. Regionally, the effects of the changing winds on oceanic and terrestrial carbon uptake are more pronounced and partly of opposite sign. We further show that the magnitude and sign of global oceanic CO2 uptake is also controlled by changes in mesoscale eddy activity, which has been suggested to increase in response to intensifying Southern Hemisphere winds. Climate and marine carbon cycle response to changes in the strength of the Southern Hemispheric westerlies
[1] It has been previously suggested that changes in the strength and position of the Southern Hemisphere westerlies could be a key contributor to glacial-interglacial atmospheric CO2 variations. To test this hypothesis, we perform a series of sensitivity experiments using an Earth system model of intermediate complexity. A strengthening of the climatological mean surface winds over the Souther...
متن کاملResponses of ocean circulation and carbon cycle to changes in the position of the Southern Hemisphere westerlies at Last Glacial Maximum
We explore the impact of a latitudinal shift in the westerly wind belt over the Southern Ocean on the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) and on the carbon cycle for Last Glacial Maximum background conditions using a state-of-the-art ocean general circulation model. We find that a southward (northward) shift in the westerly winds leads to an intensification (weakening) of no more...

[1] To study the response of the global carbon cycle to a weakening of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), a series of freshwater perturbation experiments is conducted both under preindustrial and glacial conditions using the earth system model of intermediate complexity LOVECLIM. A shutdown of the AMOC leads to substantial cooling of the North Atlantic, a weak warming of th...
متن کاملCentral role of Southern Hemisphere winds and eddies in modulating the oceanic uptake of anthropogenic carbon
[1] Although the world ocean is known to be a major sink of anthropogenic carbon dioxide, the exact processes governing the magnitude and regional distribution of carbon uptake remain poorly understood. Here we show that Southern Hemisphere winds, by altering the Ekman volume transport out of the Southern Ocean, strongly control the regional distribution of anthropogenic uptake in an ocean gene...
متن کاملThe Southern Ocean Overturning: Parameterized versus Permitted Eddies
Four versions of the same global climate model, with horizontal resolution ranging from 1.88 3 3.68 to 0.28 3 0.48, are employed to evaluate the resolution dependence of the Southern Ocean meridional overturning circulation. At coarse resolutions North Atlantic Deep Water tends to upwell diabatically at low latitudes, so that the Southern Ocean is weakly coupled with the rest of the ocean. As r...
